The KODIAK Melbourne Mustangs are pleased to announce the signing of French-Canadian defenceman Charles-Olivier Roussel (185cm, 89kg) for 2018.
Drafted in the second round, 42nd overall, in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Nashville Predators, Charles spent his post-draft years in the CHL where his Saint John Sea Dogs were QMJHL champions in 2012. This was followed by time with Predators affiliates Milwaukee Admirals (AHL) and Cincinnati Cyclones (ECHL). More recently Charles has split his time between the LNAH, including a championship in 2015, and playing in France.
We asked Charles what Mustangs fans are in for with him as part of our team. “I will try to bring as much as I can each night, whether it is scoring goals or stopping them, as me being a defenceman. I think that the fans will like me because I am emotional on the ice but charismatic off the ice. I am close to the fans, I am always ready for activities where we get to spend time and get to know each other.”
Charismatic may be a good description - when we asked Charles if as a dual citizen he feels more French or Canadian he said “Canadian, no question. Maple syrup! Have you ever tried putting a baguette on crepes?”
The decision to come to Melbourne was an easy one. “I have multiple friends from Montreal that went to play hockey in Australia and all of them said it was one of the best experience of their lives. They were telling me how well treated players are and how passionate the fans are, so it made it easy to want to come and play being the adventurous kind of guy that I am. As for the Mustangs, my spouse and I have always wanted to live in Melbourne for the liveable city that it is, for how modern and forward-thinking it is overall. Plus, after speaking with Max on the phone, I felt really comfortable and confident that the Mustangs was the team I had to go to.“
Coach Maxime Langelier-Parent says “We are thrilled to have Charles join our team. He will be a great fit with our local players and will bring a mix of talent, size, and leadership to our group. Charles is an efficient player both offensively and defensively and will contribute to solidifying our defensive squad. I’m sure fans will be delighted with the opportunity to see a former NHL second round pick wear the Mustangs’ jersey.”
