The KODIAK Melbourne Mustangs are pleased to announce the signing of Canadian forward Brett Ferguson (184cm, 88kg) for 2018.
After his junior hockey with the Red Deer Rebels of the WHL resulted in an invite to the Edmonton Oilers rookie development camp, Brett completed a collegiate career with the University of Alberta Golden Bears, including a CIS championship in 2014. He then joined the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL for their playoff run in 2016. A move to Europe followed, where unfortunately injury ended his 2016-17 season in France before it began. A healthy Brett is currently playing in the EIHL for the Guildford Flames.
"After our first discussion I knew Brett would be a perfect fit for the Mustangs," said coach Maxime Langelier-Parent. "He was all about coming in, working hard every single day, and doing whatever it takes to help the team win. Brett was a stellar player for one of the top programs in the Canadian University league and is averaging over a point per game in the top league in the UK this season. He plays a strong 200-foot game and takes care of the little details that make a big difference. We are thrilled to have him on board."
Brett is keen to check out this side of the world. "I decided to come to Australia because it’s a place that I’ve always wanted to visit. I’ve heard nothing but great things about the city of Melbourne and Australia as a whole. I love playing hockey, so once the Mustangs reached out to me with the opportunity to play hockey AND live in Melbourne, I was completely sold on it! I’m excited about playing for the Mustangs and the opportunity to win the AIHL championship."
What can we expect to see from our latest import forward? "I think I’ll bring a big offensive game to the Mustangs as well as a responsible defensive game. I’d love to contribute and produce in anyway that the team needs me. I think Mustangs fans will like me (I hope!) because I am a hard-working player."
