Split Weekend Out West
Sunday, May 6, 2018

The KODIAK Melbourne Mustangs have split the wins on their first road trip of the season, winning 6-2 over the Perth Thunder on Saturday before losing 4-2 on Sunday.

In an encouraging sign for the scoring depth of the team, the weekend saw six different goal scorers. On Saturday the spoils came from Vadim Virjassov, Brett Ferguson, Brendan McDowell, Sean Jones, and Pat O'Kane who had two on the night, including an empty net goal. Sunday's two goals both came courtesy of Mitch Humphries.

Saturday saw the Mustangs end the first two periods up by just one goal, before a four-goal haul in the third period that came despite being slightly outshot by the Thunder over the twenty minutes.

Sunday's game saw the Mustangs debut of goaltender Alecksi Toivonen and seemed destined to be a low scoring affair. The first period had no goals, and it took the Mustangs giving up two short handed breakaways one after the other for the Thunder to get one past Toivonen late in the second period.

The third period had all the action as two more goals to the Thunder followed, before Humphries got the Mustangs on the board with 6.04 remaining in the game. Shortly after the Thunder scored their fourth goal four players were ejected from the game after a scuffle. Humphrie's second goal then came after the Thunder had two men in the penalty box, with an empty Mustangs net.

"We played a very good paced game on Saturday and executed the game plan," said head coach Maxime Langelier-Parent. "We didn't do that today, we tried to play a game that is not ours. We will get back to work on the little details that will bring us success and prepare accordingly for next weekend."

The Mustangs return to action at home as we host the first Melbourne derby on Friday night at 7.30pm. Very limited numbers of tickets remain available via Ticketmaster. This game is followed by a visit from the Newcastle Northstars on Sunday May 13 at 4pm. We couldn't think of a better place to take your mum for Mother's Day!
