The Kodiak Melbourne Mustangs had two games over the weekend with a mixed bag of results.
After being down for much of the game, the Mustangs fought back for a point winning against cross town rivals Melbourne Ice 5-4 in a shootout. Despite a strong game Saturday the Mustangs went down 4-3 against the Ice Dogs.
Penalties to Anderson, Humphries (x2) and Kolesnikovs in the Second Period meant that Ice was allowed to skip away to a 4-1 lead after two periods.
Thankfully Humphries made up for his penalties in the third scoring two goals as part of the Mustangs bombardment of the Ice goalie - Michael James faced 19 shots in the final period. Pat O’Kane scored the other goal for a 4-4 result at the end of Regular Time. With all Ice players missing their shots, Davies was able to find the back of the net to give us a 5-4 SO win against Ice.
Saturday’s game was entertaining but unfortunately we couldn’t get across the line. The Mustangs started strongly in the first period peppering the Ice Dogs net 14 times. Brett Ferguson and Pat O’Kane found the back of the net in the first giving us a 2-0 lead. We fell away in the second with a drop in intensity and defensive lapses. The Ice Dogs scored three. The intensity lifted again in the last with the Mustangs again peppering the net. Despite 15 shots on the net in the last, the Mustangs could only add one more goal (scored by fan-favourite Sean Jones) leading to a 4-3 Ice Dogs win.
The Mustangs have played an offensive game all season and been unlucky with finding the back of the net.
