Preview Round 15 – Perth and Adelaide Road Trip

Preview Round 15 – Perth and Adelaide Road Trip

Christi Lee

While there is life there is hope, and with two hard-fought wins in their past two games the MOAT: Melbourne Mustangs are keeping their faint playoff hopes alive. They do need other results to go in their favour, however as long as they keep winning, the Mustangs will give themselves a chance of participating in the 2015 AIHL Finals and retaining the Goodall Cup.

Of the seven remaining games, five are against fellow teams battling for fourth spot – the Adelaide Adrenaline and Sydney Bears. Along with the Mustangs, both of these teams have two games in hand on the fourth placed CBR Brave, so no team will feel comfortable until the final weeks of the season are done. The first of the Mustangs three remaining games against the Adrenaline will be played in Adelaide this Sunday, following a game against the Perth Thunder the day before. In a repeat of the road trip made in June, the Mustangs face the challenge of travelling over 2000km between fixtures on the same weekend.

The earlier season road trip to the western states did not prove to be as difficult as it had seemed. The Mustangs gave themselves every chance of defeating the Thunder, leading on three separate occasions before conceding twice in the final 14 minutes to go down by a solitary goal. They showed no signs of fatigue from the extended travelling they were required to do the following day, as Joey Hughes continued his great form in Adelaide with four goals in a dominant 6-2 victory. The Mustangs will need to be even better this time, as anything but the maximum points could spell the end of their season.

The Thunder head into this game following two big wins over the Sydney Ice Dogs. These games couldn’t have come at a better time for the Thunder, who had fallen from the top of the standings with three losses in their previous four games. In the lopsided scores we have come to expect from teams playing the Ice Dogs this year, Jordan Kyros ran rampant with five goals across the weekend. They were able to offer more ice time to some of their rookies, in Alastair Punler and Tomek Sak, who succeeded in scoring their first AIHL goals last weekend. This strong depth will give the Thunder a huge boost heading towards the finals.

The Mustangs will realise how much of confidence boost a couple of big wins can give a team, having been in the same situation last week, before knocking off the league-leading Melbourne Ice and Newcastle North Stars in succession. They will need to be prepared to start the game strongly and not allow the Thunder to get any rhythm. Having seen what the Mustangs did to their competitors at the top of the standings, the Thunder will not take them lightly. If the H. Newman Reid Trophy, awarded to the first placed team at the conclusion of the regular season, existed in more than name only, the Thunder would be looking to get their hands on it and will be pulling out all stops to be in the box seat when the finals roll around.

By the time the Mustangs get to Adelaide for their second game of the weekend, they will have played four games since the Adrenaline last played – a shootout loss to the Brave on July 12. Having had two byes in as many weeks, the Adrenaline will either come into the game refreshed and ready to go or a little out of sync. The Mustangs cannot anticipate it to be the latter and will need to build on their recent good form.

Star forward Pat O’Kane is on a five game scoring streak in which time he has netted nine goals, including some clutch goals at crucial times. If this continues, the Mustangs will be a good chance of returning with the maximum points and allowing us all to keep our hopes up for a while longer. One thing is for certain this team is not going to accept elimination without a fight.
